Abstract

Background. Composites’ nominative nature is specified by their components’ meaning and peculiarities of their existence in language. The aim of this work is to define a nominative status of adjective-composites in the system of traditionally selected parts of speech, as well as taking into account modern trands of language development tendencies.
Materials and methods. Taken from newspapers, magazines and mass media, adjective-composites are in the focus of this article. The structure analysis method, distributive and descriptive ones, the method of vocabulary definition analysis were used to define language units’ nominative status.
Results. The author has considered specific features of attribute nomination in connection with adjective’s auxiliary role in the system of traditional parts of speech. The modern trend in definition of parts of speech suggests three syntactical functions called actant, predicate and attribute. Complex adjectives have shown a lack of formal independency, and one can view them as an auxiliary part of speech.
Conclusions. Adjectives and complex adjectives as well exist as attribute actant in a sentence. Being an auxiliary part of speech, adjectives are used to realize lexical meanings of significant glosses and to update referent slots of concepts in connection with the nominathem theory.
